Leave Your Toothbrush At Home

Getting a new job is like entering into an arranged marriage.  Suddenly you are thrown headlong into a full time relationship without even knowing if your job is going to leave the toilet seat up all the time.

Shouldn't jobs be more like dating?  When I meet a new job, I don't want to spend every day hanging out with it right away.  I want to see a movie with my new job and then cool off for a couple of weeks before getting together again.  My new job would refrain from bringing me gifts, unless they were modest, like a company shirt.   My job would be nervous about feeling me up.  My job would ask its friends if it should call me yet.  My job and I would split the bill.

After some time, we would become aware that a soft, verdant mold of trust and affection has been taking up residence in both our hearts.  Now we would be ready for a more regular dating schedule, for "going steady."  My job and I would have a mature understanding of one another's attributes and faults.  My job and I would eat cereal and read the Sunday paper together in silence, without awkwardness.
